Bath ranked 9th in the UK and best in the South West in new Sunday Times guide

2010年9月13日

The University of Bath has been ranked 9th out of 121 universities and colleges in the latest UK league table published by The Sunday Times.

The Sunday Times University Guide 2011 ranked the University number one in a list of South West universities, and seventh in the UK for the percentage of students in graduate level jobs.

Bath also featured in the newspaper’s top 20 lists for high student satisfaction rates; low drop-out rates; and the highest number of students gaining a first or 2:1.

The Sunday Times University Guide 2011 says: “In science, engineering, technology and sport, Bath has few peers confirmed by the 2008 research assessment exercise which found evidence of internationally excellent work across the board.

“About 60% of students undertake a business placement and 85.4% of them gain graduate level jobs, ranking Bath seventh in the UK. The drop-out rate of barely one in 20 is about half the level expected by the funding council, and levels of student satisfaction are consistently good.”

The newspaper also focuses on the University’s strength in sport and uses Amy Williams’ recent Winter Olympic gold medal winning performance as an example that “Bath students are high achievers on university sports fields at all levels.”

It sums up the University by saying: “Bath offers you more than just a degree, there are many opportunities to get involved including sport, arts, enterprise and volunteering.”

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath, Professor Glynis Breakwell, said: “I am delighted with this news and colleagues across the University can feel rightly proud of our top ten position.

“It is gratifying to know that the commitment and effort of everyone at the University to provide a high quality education for our students has been recognised nationally.

“It is also very pleasing to see some of our key strengths such as our world class research, graduate employment and student retention are all highlighted and praised.”

The Sunday Times University Guide 2011 was published this weekend (12

September) and contains full profiles of all universities and the leading colleges of higher education in the UK.

The league table is drawn up from criteria including student satisfaction, teaching and research quality, academic peer review, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, student/staff ratios, graduate employability and university dropout rates.
